ASME A17.1

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers known as ASME, is the association that updates and maintains control of the elevator code books for vertical transportation codes. The organization has been providing codes for elevators since 1921 and they release a new code year whenever they update the code. The current ASME A17.1 2016 Safety Code for Elevator and Escalators can be found on the ASME Website.

It would seem to be a straightforward task to determine what code applies to your building. But, the local Authority Having Jurisdiction decides when to adopt the code plus, it is common for the Authority Having Jurisdiction to create their own code based on components of the ASME code.
